The Caystone

Project type

Architecture

Date

March 2023

In general, a given space's smaller dimension is the most
noticeable, for example, in a long and thin hallway, all one
can think about is how small the width is, this is true with
islands too. Because most of the islands of the Exuma Cays
are constantly sinking into the sea, the shape of most of
these islands is long and thin. To reflect the noticeable
thinness of the island of the Shroud Cay that my site is on,
the building has a long hallway spanning more than 70 feet
in length and 15' in width. While most of the building being
an informal observatory, The Caystone's formal
observatory possesses a viewshed of the storm surge
beach, an eroding cliffside bordering a dying coral reef, a
freshwater lake becoming brackish water with the saltwater
flooding it, the ever-expanding marshland, and the low lying
tropical vegetation. This observatory acts as a camera with
the lens of the glass curtain wall granting the users the
ability to bear witness to the diverse ecosystems and
situations pertaining to them as this building stands strong
over the years of flooding and hurricanes.
